It is now widely accepted that lung cancer screening (LCS) using low dose CT (LDCT) reduces lung cancer specific mortality, in those at increased risk of lung cancer, through identification of participants with early-stage disease who can be offered treatment with curative intent.1–3

In 2022 the UK National Screening Committee recommended that all four UK nations move towards implementation of targeted LCS.4 Across England, the National Health Service (NHS) England Targeted Lung Health Check pilots, now renamed the Lung Cancer Screening Programme, are being rolled out nationwide.5 6 As of April 2026, 50% of the eligible population have been offered screening with full roll-out across England, anticipated by 2030. The Welsh government has committed to commencing a national programme in 2027.7 Implementation decisions by the Scottish Government and the Northern Ireland Executive are awaited.
