Sophie Cook
Sophie is a doctor who trained and worked in the UK as a general practitioner. She has 15 years’ editorial experience at The BMJ. She joined The BMJ as editorial registrar in 2009 and went on to work as head of education, head of scholarly comment and UK research editor before becoming Editor in chief of BMJ Medicine in 2021. In 2022, Sophie took on the role of Head of Clinical content for The BMJ. In this role, Sophie leads the education team and supports editors across all sections of The BMJ and other BMJ Journals with the creation of clinical content. Sophie provides senior clinical support to the team of patient editors at The BMJ to deliver our patient and public partnership strategy. She also co-leads our climate coverage at The BMJ and the annual climate editions, which The BMJ has published since 2021.
Coming from a general practice background, Sophie’s clinical interests are broad. However, she is particularly passionate about improving the health of women and children, the effects of climate on health, promoting sustainable healthcare, and the impact of social determinants of health. Editorially, Sophie advocates equality and diversity in research and publication, minimising conflicts of interest, and promoting partnership with patients and the public.
